Digest of Mass Delegation Activity — 1/4/14 – 1/10/14

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, “Increased transparency will shut down backroom deal-making and ensure that Congress, citizens and watchdog groups can hold regulatory agencies accountable for strong and effective enforcement that benefits the public interest,” Jan. 8, 2014.

  • Sen. Warren introduces the “Truth in Settlements Act” (with Republican senator Tom Coburn) which would make public the settlements the government reaches with corporations after wrongdoing is uncovered (most prominently, the role big financial institutions played in the economic collapse). Warren has been sharply critical of the lackluster enforcement pursued by the SEC.
  • This is the fifth bill Sen. Warren has introduced, and the fourth that deals with the financial industry (full list of sponsored amendments, bills and resolutions here).
  • Warren expressed her support on the floor of the Senate for the CFPB announced new rules to ban the practice where lenders pay brokers to steer customers into high-cost loans (sometimes locking a customer into a ballooning sub-prime loan when they could have qualified for a better one).

Sen. Ed Markey “Unemployment assistance isn’t just a line in a budget; it is a lifeline for millions of people out of work through no fault of their own,” Jan. 8, 2014.
